g'day g'day and mrs may - 1996

Mrs May was the head teacher of the junior school. We used to have our assembly in two joined classrooms and Kindy, Year 1 and Year 2 would be all together. Mrs May was relieving for my usual teacher, Mrs Curr. We were in the demountables near Dalton Street in a normal day, when Mrs May put on some music. Some of it was country, and as I wasn't very familiar I kind of switched off and just bopped to the beat. Next, she had us up dancing and having fun. Suddenly, the song clicked over and a familiar tune came on. Slim Dusty's 'G'Day G'Day' poured out of the speakers and I started to sing it quietly. You see, Dad had played Slim Dusty a few times in the truck and at home and he seemed to have them on repeat. Let's just say I was very, familiar with this one. Mrs May looked stunned that I knew it, and this is how I ended up mic in hand, in front of the junior school at assembly. I can remember so many eyes looking back at me as I stood up there. Not sure really if I was actually asked to sing, or if as a child you just kind of go along with what the adults have planned. Nevertheless, here I was singing G'Day G'Day at South Dubbo Primary. At the time it was a little scary, but also pretty fun singing a song I knew. Maybe this is where the performance bug bit me? Thanks Mrs May! =) Mel x
